Articles

Dynamism: Creating Dynamic Content with PHP

Use the server-side scripting language PHP to create and maintain dynamic website content. That is, learn how to make your website automagically insert header and footer files above and below your content for uniformity.

Empathising-Systemising (E-S) Theory

A pair of tests to 'calculate' a person's brain type with respect to empathising and systemising. Online tests are included in this article.

mod_rewrite Demystified: A Brief Guide With Resources

This is an introductory article on the Apache module mod_rewrite, explaining how to get started customizing your website's URLs for readability, search engine optimization, and security.

A Guide to Efficiently Using Irssi and Screen

As the title says, this guide details the use of the IRC client irssi and the unix program screen. Many areas are covered, including basic commands, configuration and client customization. The purpose of screen is explained and its usage together with irssi is also detailed. This is, so far, my most read article. It is also the longest and most detailed.

An Illustrated Guide to Split Windows in Irssi

An explanation and walkthrough of creating and manipulating split windows in irssi. Screenshots of irssi are provided (hence "illustrated") with the guide.

Irssi Documentation and Resources

A small collection of sources for information and scripts for irssi, provided as a supplement for the official client website, irssi.org.

Supercooled Water

My experience with the supercooling of H2O, including three videos of water solidifying instantly. This article was one of the top stories of 2005 on digg.com.

Projects

IQ

My intelligent modular IRC bot project; probably my largest to date, and one of two currently on freshmeat.

MIA (Matt's IA-1 Alarm)

Another retired project; MIA is a Bourne shell script created to turn my hacked-to-linux iPaq IA-1 Internet Appliance into a functional 7-day alarm clock. The IA-1 worked great as an alarm clock and SSH terminal until the power supply fried.

gcalc.pl

A program to use Google's calculator interactively or to do one-shot calculations on the command line.

FDC Labs

Not so much a project as a collection of projects and other experiments, FDC Labs was created as a haven for existing and future works of code. Labs.* is listed here because several scripts and various code snippets that may be helpful or interesting can be found there.

SimpleRip: Ripping/Encoding DVDs to XviD with Mencoder

One of the more useful projects listed, SimpleRip is a JavaScript application to generate the necessary commands to convert a DVD or other video to XviD using one- or two-pass encoding with mencoder.

Irssi Scripts

I have written a considerable amount of documentation on my favorite IRC client, irssi, and this page lists the published scripts that I have created for it. Several of the scripts are for manipulation of BitlBee.
